OUR PROGRAMS

The Oceans mean everything to the Maldives.

Parley Maldives designs targeted programs which engage communities in the Parley AIR Strategy to stop the seep of plastics into the oceans and environment.

The Maldives is challenged in unimaginable ways to manage waste from millions of visiting tourists and a population of more than half a million. Parley Maldives focuses on removing plastics from waste streams, preventing it from burning in landfills, and implementing the Parley AIR Strategy to turn the Maldives into a Future Island Nation — a leader in solutions that protect our planet.

COLLABORATING TO CREATE THE BLUEPRINTS FOR CHANGE

GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP

The Republic of the Maldives has endorsed and adopted the Parley AIR Strategy as the framework for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals and creating a Blue Economy as a ‘Future Island Nation.’ Parley Maldives has formed various collaborations with different government bodies and state-owned corporations to implement the Parley AIR Strategy nationwide.

It is through advocacy, belief and policy that true and lasting change can be brought to the future of the country.

SCHOOL COLLABORATIONS

In partnership with local schools, NGOs and the Ministry of Education, Parley Maldives develops and integrates programs which put progress directly into the hands of our future. Students learn about different types of plastic waste and ocean threats, participate in the recycling process, and develop habits they can start practicing at home and in their communities.

Students are also given the chance to explore the underwater world. Our collaborative programs have helped more than 100,000 youths and their parents go swimming and snorkeling.

TOURISM & HOSPITALITY

As the largest industry in the country, tourism plays a major role in the consumption of single-use plastics in the Maldives. With over 1 million arrivals per year, tourists, as well as the services provided to them, are the single highest generator of waste per capita.

The Parley Tourism Program works closely with the industry throughout the Maldives in order to implement the AIR Strategy, and incorporate resorts, liveaboards, guesthouses and tour operators in our programs.

COMMUNITY CLEANUPS

Cleanups remove immediate threats to marine life and raise awareness in surrounding communities. Every piece collected from the beach is a piece that does not adversely impact the environment.

In collaboration with local communities, schools, businesses, government municipalities and NGOs, Parley Maldives organizes cleanups to remove plastic waste from polluted shorelines of inhabited and uninhabited islands, underwater habitats and open ocean.

ISLAND IMPACTS

The Maldives consists of 1,192 islands. Only 185 of these are inhabited. Most of these islands hold a population that ranges from less than 500 to 3000.

With such a dispersed population, it is important that each community is engaged and involved in the interception and avoidance of plastic. Parley's Island Air Program focuses on these small communities and helping them become Blue Economies.

URBAN INTERCEPTION

Out of the 185 inhabited Maldivian islands, a few boast populations of over 3000 people. These urban areas face different challenges when it comes to plastic waste and implementing the Parley AIR Strategy.

The Parley Maldives Urban Interception Program focuses solely on these densely populated areas, developing solutions tailored to the unique needs of each island. As part of these efforts, Parley introduced the first recycling and innovation lab in the nation’s capital city, Malé.

CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP

Due to its geographical nature and dispersed populations, the Maldives requires extensive cooperation across multiple collaborators for a movement as large as implementing the AIR Strategy to take effect.

The Parley Corporate Membership Program engages businesses, both state and privately owned, utilizing their resources spanning the country. This empowers corporations to support change through multiplying our accessibility to logistics and growing our capacity for implementing solutions.

FISHERIES INTERCEPTION

There are an estimated 180 yellowfin tuna fishery boats registered in the Maldives. Each carries a minimum of 25 cases of bottled water per trip, none of which make the return voyage. Every year, 2 million plastic bottles end up directly in the ocean from these fishing boats alone, impacting sea life and everything that feeds off of it.

Parley Maldives targets this complacent dumping of plastic into the sea and strategizes ways to intercept waste in collaboration with fishing boats, fishing companies and the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture.

ISLAND TRANSPORTATION

The Islands of The Maldives extend a length of 871 kilometers from north to south. Of the 90,000 square kilometers that makes up for the territory of the Maldives, only 298 of this is land, making sea transport the number one method of inter-island transport.

The Parley Transportation Program invites all modes of transport within the Maldives to engage in Parley AIR solutions.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

Rising Blue, an initiative of Parley’s Ocean Uprise and Ocean School Programs, educates and inspires a new generation of Ocean Guardians through involvement in various ocean immersion and leadership-building activities, giving them the tools to stand up for the health of the oceans, address climate change and find ways to safeguard their future.

This program empowers youth to defend their future by amplifying their voice for the oceans.
